In
Central Lucknow, adjacent to the banks of river Gomti stands an imposing
heritage property presently called "OEL HOUSE" During the British Raj, its Lawns
merged into the river Gomti. Today, while embankments have been made next to the
river, the property is surrounded by the river on one side and well manicured
lawns and trees on the other. The surroundings provide an air of serenity and
calm amidst the hustle and bustle of central Lucknow.
While the origins of the property
cannot be exactly traced, it is commonly believed that it was built during the
regime of Nawab Sadat Ali Khan-ruler of the province of Oudh at the
time-sometime in the 18th. Century. Records of the bygone era suggest that it
was the Old King's Library. Over the years the property changed hands several
times but the last transaction of the property was in 1929. When the Court of
wards for the United Provinces of Oudh and Agra changed with the superintendence
of properties of Raja Yuveraj Dutt Singh of Oel and Kaimarah Raj purchased the
said property from George K. S. Jackson, Barrister-at-law of Lucknow on behalf
of the Raja. Ever since the property has stayed with the family of the erstwhile
Raja, whose successors still reside there.
